Why combat dry skin? Dry skin is uncomfortable It is a bad barrier against the elements and microbes, and will not do a good job of keeping your body from losing water to the environment. Dry skin is an “entry” point to wrinkles, and will make the existing ones more noticeable. How NOT to combat dry skin. 1) Don’t remove most of the epidermis with strong acid peels or dermabrasion or whatever methods is suggested to give you “glow”. The glow will be from an inflamed epidermis that has lost its capacity to do its job as skin barrier. Do you really think that a cream sold in a store…

I know, it is a lot of work, but as you get more used to doing it, it will become easier and faster. The problem is that sometimes the manufacturers “forget” to list an ingredient or two and then you need to read between the lines. I was helping my grandson with his Science Fair project. What did I learn? A lot. First, let me tell you that herbicides are based on the same principle as antibiotics: they have to be selective, i.e. kill the baddie without harming the goodie, For antibiotics (and antifungals) the baddie is the microbe, and we humans are the goodies. For herbicides, the goodie is…

We may not like the oiliness that is natural to our skin as teenagers, but it has its advantages. Disadvantages? They are many. The minor one is the look of our oily skin. Shiny and not “glowing”, although it will reflect the light and be as glowing as it can be without Photoshop. Then, the sebum is great food for acne bacteria, and we all know how that goes. But think what your skin looks without sebum, or, rather, just wait until you are 40! As hormone production goes down, sebum will go down too and then dry skin and wrinkles come with it.If you are lucky, acne is long…

We have all done silly things to ourselves. Let’s hope we learnt something and don’t repeat the same mistakes (we will make new ones!). One of the mistakes most women do is ignore how fragile the eye area of the skin is, especially the eyelids and even more specially, the area that form the eyelashes. It is not just our fault, but that of the unscrupulous people who advertise dangerous ways of becoming more beautiful. They don’t tell you that those methods are dangerous, and that the effects are fleeting and then you are left with damage that, sometimes, is not fixable. In this list: people who advertise permanent makeup,…

Never apply an essential oil directly to your skin! They are powerful chemicals, powerful enough to dissolve plastic and kill your skin cells. The very volatile molecules in essential oils reach the olfactory bulbs in our noses giving us great pleasure. Essential oils are extracted from a variety of plants and contain the volatile chemicals that can be evaporated by distillation, although sometimes they are pressed directly from leaves and fruit peel. The high price of some flower essential oils is due to the very low yield, i.e. many pounds of plant material need to be treated to get just a few drops of essential oil. Essential oils are a…

No. Hair is dead protein, there are no live cells that can produce (or use) energy. This does not mean that you can’t do something for your hair. 1) Wash. Why? Because we like to smell nice and look nice! Not washing your hair will not make it stay longer or grow faster, and it will look horrible. Try, however, to avoid fragrances and strong detergents, because they will irritate your scalp and affect the quality of the hair the scalp is making. 2) Condition. Yes, hair is made of protein (not live cells) but it will look and feel nicer if you neutralize all those electric charges with a…

I always had my own explanation: when we age, we have less blood vessels reaching our dermis, and nutrition decreases. Also, production of growth factors decreases. Mitochondria get “older” and are less efficient at producing energy. These statements are based on research. In fact, I am sure that almost everything has changed in my skin since I was a little girl. But this does not mean that changing those things back (assuming it would be possible!) would have a rejuvenating effect. And it is not enough to speculate, I would ask for proof and, if possible, a mechanism of action. This is why I like the latest news from the…

The dermal-epidermal junction is so thin (in a microscope it is just a line that we may be tempted to ignore it completely. And yet, it is crucial to skin’s health. It is also critical to some problems that many of us consider very annoying: sun spots that appear as we age. Others don’t have to wait that long: they are afflicted with melasma or vitiligo much earlier in life. These are all disorders of pigmentation, and, apparently, disruption of the dermal/epidermal junction may be the starting event in disorders of pigmentation initiated by factors like UV radiation. Once the chain of events is initiated, keratinocytes don’t adhere properly and…
