Eating (and supplements?) for your skin. Why topical skincare is not enough (and vice versa!)

It’s obvious (or it should be!). A good diet is necessary for health. Your heart, your lungs, your bones depend on a good diet. No proteins in your diet? No heart! You will find a long list of ailments that follow the deficiency of any vitamin.

Why? Vitamins are chemicals we can’t make ourselves but, at the same time, are essential to the functioning of our body. For example, all of the water-soluble vitamins and two of the fat-soluble vitamins, A and K, function as cofactors or coenzymes. Coenzymes participate in numerous biochemical reactions involving energy release from food, as well as the accompanying anabolic reactions. In addition, vitamin cofactors are critical for processes involved in proper vision, blood coagulation, hormone production, and the integrity of collagen.

Similarly, we are unable to make some amino acids that are essential to make proteins that make up our bodies. We have to consume those as food.

Some fatty acids that we can’t make are essential to cell membranes.

Even the sugars, amino acids, and lipids that we can make from scratch require energy and this must be obtained from food. Plants can “live on air” (they are capable of photosynthesis, but humans are not.

It makes sense that to be able to maintain a healthy body we need a healthy (complete) diet. Ou skin depends on a healthy body, but a good diet may not be enough.

Will “supplements” help? You can buy supplements that promise you healthy hair and skin. Don’t believe the hype. The collagen peptides in those pills will do little for you, the rest of the body will be there to catch the few amino acids that will make it to the blood. Other vitamins included in those costly supplements are also present in the inexpensive multivitamins you can buy at the supermarket.

So, what else do you need for healthy skin? Nothing if you are a child, except for sunscreen and good barrier cream for diaper rash. But if you are over 30, it’s time to supplement, topically, what your skin gets from your body through the capillaries that reach into the dermis. When your skin stops being a priority, it’s time to look at the Skin Actives website to complement the nutrition that your skin receives.

Look and you will find vitamins, essential fatty acids, amino acids, plus the growth factors that decline as we age.
