Winter is here, and so are chapped lips.

Why?  Chapped lips are a sign of inflammation. The answer to chapped lips is to try and prevent the causes of inflammation.    Your lips are exposed to the stress caused by different factors: sun, smoke, hot liquids. Stress makes the lips more susceptible to infections like the herpes virus. Eczema and allergies may also cause lip inflammation.

The skin of the lips, with their three to five cellular layers, is very thin compared to typical face skin, which has up to 16 layers. The stratum corneum is small and thin, moisture retention is low, and the skin barrier ineffective.

The lip skin does not have sweat glands or hair, so it does not have the usual protective layer of sweat and body oils which keep the skin smooth and somewhat protected. For these reasons, the lips dry out faster and become chapped more easily.

And why the color? In people with light skin color, the lip skin contains fewer melanocytes (cells that produce melanin, which gives skin its color). The blood vessels can be seen through the skin of the lips, which makes them look pink/red, and the resistance to UV provided by the melanin will not be there to protect them.

You can prevent and even reverse to some extent the effects of sun, aging, and tobacco consumption, i.e. lip lines and inflammation.
